What is CourseLeaf SYL?
CourseLeaf SYL is a web-based syllabus management platform. It centralizes how syllabi are created, edited, and published, and stores every version in one searchable repository. It is part of the same CourseLeaf suite Texas State already uses for its online catalog and curriculum management.
-
How does it work?
Each course section you are assigned to teach appears in SYL automatically, with course details pre-filled from Banner and the catalog. Create, edit, and publish your syllabus.
- Open your section. Course title, number, description, and schedule information are already filled in.
- Complete your sections. Add instructor information, readings, assignments and assessments, and a schedule of topics. Drag-and-drop tools make reordering easy, and you can copy content from a previous syllabus.
- Submit for review. Your syllabus routes to your department chair, who approves it or returns it with comments.
- Publish. Once approved, a public version posts to the online syllabus repository, and students can see updates as they happen.
Institution-required content, such as university policies and statements, is maintained centrally, so every syllabus stays current.
-
Why is it important?
- State compliance. Texas HB 2504 requires public universities to post undergraduate course syllabi online in a searchable, public format. SYL automates that posting and lets the university control which parts of a syllabus are public.
- Less work for faculty. Pre-filled course data and copy-forward mean you no longer rebuild the same information each term.
- Accuracy and consistency. Syllabi draw from approved curriculum, so course descriptions and required policies match the catalog.
- A reliable record. Version history and archiving give the university evidence for SACSCOC and state reporting and answer historical requests about what students received.
- Clarity for students. Students get consistent, comparable course information before and during the term.
-
How does SYL relate to CourseLeaf CAT?
SYL is the last link in a connected chain: curriculum approved in CIM publishes to the catalog in CAT, and SYL draws on that same approved course record.
Tool
What it does at Texas State
CourseLeaf CIM
Proposes and approves new and revised courses and programs
CourseLeaf CAT
Publishes the official online catalog at mycatalog.txstate.edu
CourseLeaf SYL
Builds, approves, and publishes section syllabi from catalog and Banner data
When a course description changes through CIM and CAT, the change flows into SYL, so syllabi stay aligned with the catalog without retyping.
